Posco Fosters Increasing Innovation through Six Sigma Training

Posco executives recently completed their Six Sigma leadership education program. Armed with new knowledge and skills from their training, Posco executives hope to create innovative activities that will increase the company’s value and improve the overall working environment.

Posco Chairman & CEO Ku-Taek Lee started the leadership education program, held at Arizona State University in the United States of America, to improve the ability of his executives to create innovative activities. All of Posco’s 36 executives have participated in the three-stage program that began on October 9. Posco executives attended various lectures, such as establishing global management strategy, maintaining a Six Sigma-based thought system, and case studies of Six Sigma applications in other advanced companies. Management experts from the Six Sigma Management R&D Center taught all the lectures given.

Posco President Chang-Oh Kang, who participated in the third stage of the education program, said, “This leadership education program has taught us to realize the true value of Six Sigma, as well as how to develop and implement managerial innovations through Six Sigma activities.” He also emphasized that the company enhance its own corporate culture and value by maintaining a Six Sigma-oriented philosophy and work system that meets global standards.

Participants said that by benchmarking advanced companies that have adopted a Six Sigma system, they saw the enormous effort required to create managerial innovations, and clearly understand the effectiveness of using Six Sigma as a tool for innovation.

Since July, Posco has offered several leadership courses for 90 Champions regarding Six Sigma activities. The company hopes that these executive leadership programs will significantly improve the ability of the entire company to apply the Six Sigma philosophy and to increase the number of innovative activities. In the future, the company plans to train all levels of employees in Six Sigma methods in order to establish an ultra-efficient workforce.
