Posco Establishes Production Plant for Extra-Wide Steel Plate

After completing the annual 2 million-tonne steel plate factory at Gwangyang Steelworks this past March, Posco has succeeded in the test production of 5300-mm-wide steel plate. The plant is now stably producing 10,000 tonnes of 4500- to 5300-mm width steel plates each month.

In addition to Posco, Nippon Steel, JFE Steel, Anshan Iron & Steel Group, and Dillinger Hütte can produce 5300-mm extra-wide steel plates.

The extra-wide rolling mill equipment has a roll force of 12,000 tonnes. Extra-wide steel plates are used in creating the structures for shipbuilding, marine facilities, and energy.

Posco says it has developed high-quality steel manufacturing technology such as a unique steel plate accelerated cooling technology, jointly developed by Posco family companies including Posco, Posco E&C, and Posco ICT since 2008.

This accelerated cooling technology is a heat treatment determining mechanical characteristics such as a product’s strength and toughness as well as its evenness by utilizing several tens of thousands of tonnes of cooling water per hour after the rolling process, quickly cooling steel materials.

Posco plans to increase current monthly extra-wide steel plate production to 50,000 tonnes by the end of the year, according to client demand.
