Posco Breaks Ground for Plate Processing Center in Dalian

In an effort to eventually export 3 million tonnes of thick steel plates annually, Posco plans to establish its first overseas production hub at the Bohai Sea region, where demand is rapidly growing in industries such as shipbuilding.

The steelmaker recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for Posco-CDPPC, a new plate facility, in the Lingang Industrial Zone, which is located on Changxing Island, Dalian. Guests included major customers such as STX Dalian Shipbuilding Engineering and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., officials of the industrial zone, and Posco employees.

Dalian is located in the southern part of the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning Province. Posco refers to the location as “a growing battlefield of global shipbuilders” including South Korean maker STX, which is driving demand for thick steel plate products to be used in the production of vessels.

”The operation of Posco-CDPPC will greatly contribute to more competitiveness of our customer companies through its differentiated services in processing and distribution, as well as to the local economy of Changxing, which will develop into China’s shipbuilding center,” said Lee Jung-yong, Manager of the Plate Products Marketing Department.

Posco plans to complete the construction of Posco-CDPPC and supply major shipbuilding companies with an annual thick plate production of 200,000 tonnes. Materials will be obtained from Posco mills in Pohang and Gwangyang. The Gwangyang mill is expected to be completed later this year.

The company expects the new facility to ultimately spearhead Posco’s sales campaign in China and meet demand of plates for shipbuilding in the Dalian region.
