Posco Begins Operation Staff Training at Krakatau Posco

Posco recently started training the operation staff at Krakatau Posco, Indonesia, a joint venture between Posco and Krakatau Steel.

Posco is now training local staff hired at Krakatau Steel with no operation experience at an integrated steelworks. The 49 participants are graduates of leading local universities including Indonesia’s Institut Teknologi Bandung.

The new employees started with a local education course in Indonesia and completed basic work education including hydraulics/pneumatics and Programmable Logic Controller basics as well as basic steel process education including iron making/steel making/hot rolling/cold rolling. The employees also received overall management-related training including coverage of Posco’s core values and corporate ethics through e-Learning.

Krakatau Posco plans on increasing employee understanding of integrated steelworks processes by starting with the steelworks on site visit. This training, with 550 employees participating through 7 sessions, will be carried out systematically with basic theory education of each process and benchmarking of each stage, assignment of personal tasks, and sharing of evaluations and feedback. Training will also include coverage of QSS (Quick Six Sigma), Posco’s approach to problem solving, as well as safety experience education.

Trainees will receive on-the-job training in preparation for test operation when they return to Indonesia. Trainees that excel will be fostered to achieve regular operations early.

The beginning of training for Krakatau Posco employees follows site clearing, base construction, and the start of pipe piling and pouring of foundations for each process area. Currently more than 13% of the overall process has been completed.

Krakatau Posco
is a joint venture established in August 2010 by Posco and the Indonesia state-run Krakatau Steel with share ratios of 7 to 3, respectively. Posco has been proactively carrying out construction of the Indonesian integrated steelworks, a first in Southeast Asia, through Krakatau Posco. The steelworks is scheduled for completion of the first stage in December 2013 with an annual production capacity system of 3 million tonnes.
