Posco, Korea District Heating to Cooperate on RDF Project
09/09/2009 - Through an MOU signed with the Korea District Heating Corp., Posco plans to promote a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) project and privately invested power plant in Daegu.
Posco and the Korea District Heating Corp. will jointly promote a project deriving fuel from wastes.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreeing to cooperate in securing investment and stable consumers to promote the project and to build privately invested power plants.
The project is a new energy business aligned with the government’s low-carbon green growth policies. It involves producing electric power from combustible wastes that used to be incinerated or buried in landfills, while the heat produced is provided to consumers.
Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is popular in leading countries such as those in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. as an environment-friendly business. In Korea, Posco has been leading similar projects in Busan and Pohang.
Through the MOU, Posco plans to promote a RDF project and privately invested power plant in Daegu. Two-hundred billion won will be invested in the project to process 600 tons of household refuse daily, producing heat and 20 MW of power.
Posco and Korea District Heating plan to expand their cooperation to other capital and metropolitan regions.
