In a statement, Steel Dynamics (SDI) said it will install the “smart” robotic cell at its Columbia City, Ind., mill, where it will serve the No. 2 caster. The manipulator will automatically perform caster operations, reducing risk and improving safety. 

A 3D computer vision system will allow for nozzle position identification and ladle shroud placement. It also will be capable of temperature measurement, sampling, and dispensing powder tundish, Steel Dynamics said.  

“The implementation of this project aligns with SDI’s core values: improving operator’s safety, enhancing product quality and increasing productivity to be more competitive on the global steel market,” SDI said.
