Plate Mill Contract Adds to Danieli's U.S. Projects
05/08/2019 - Danieli has been awarded a contract to install a new primary descaler and hot plate leveler and to replace the No. 1 plate shearing line at JSW Steel’s Baytown, Texas, plate mill.
The work is under way and commissioning is set to occur this fall, Danieli said in a statement.
The project is the first phase of an improvement plan to the mill. In a second phase, which Danieli also will be responsible for, the company will replace the reversing rolling mill and cooling beds; install a pre-leveler and a new direct quenching and accelerated cooling system; and add a new cold plate leveler.
The Baytown project is among several Danieli projects in the U.S.
In Florida and Missouri, Danieli is building two of its MI.DA. micro-mills for Nucor Corp.
Danieli Group chairman Gianpietro Benedetti told AIST Steel News that those projects are on schedule and will become the latest examples of MI.DA. plants.
Danieli has installed MI.DA. plants in Greece, Egypt, Israel, and three more have been recently ordered from China. One of those, he said, will be capable of 1 million metric tons annually.
Benedetti said the technology has continuously evolved. Higher production speeds have been achieved, he said, and the mills are producing a wider range of rolled products, from bars to spooled bars in coil as well as wire rod.
“Casting speed increases up to 8 m/minute speed have been reached during tests, and we target to consolidate this record performance soon and produce 800,000 tpy with one strand only,” he said.
Elsewhere, Danieli is working a QSP mill for Nucor’s Gallatin sheet plant in Kentucky.
Benedetti said the new equipment is being fabricated.
“The team-up between Nucor and Danieli is excellent, and the project is proceeding very well,” he said.
“Nucor is an undisputed front runner in thin-slab-cast coil production, and with the renewed Gallatin Steel plant it will remain there, in terms of OpEx, quality and flexibility for small-lot production,” he said.
