Plans for Giant Steel Plant Put on Hold
04/18/2017 - Vietnam’s prime minister has stopped Hoa Sen Group’s massive $10.6 billion integrated steel plant to allow more time to study its feasibility and environmental impacts, reports Vietnam’s VnExpress newspaper.
Saying that preparations plant for the proposed plant had been too “hasty,” Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said more examination is needed of whether there is sufficient foreign and domestic demand to support the project and of potential environmental impacts.
The plant, designed to produce 16 million metric tons annually, was approved by the government last year amid fallout from the Formosa Ha Tinh Steel wastewater spill that polluted more than 200 kilometers of coastline last April.
