Plain Dealer: ArcelorMittal Cleveland to Invest $55 Million in Blast Furnace
09/05/2013 - The ArcelorMittal steel mill in Cleveland will invest US$55 million in one of its two blast furnaces, according to Mark Granakis, president of Local 979 of the United Steelworkers, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Granakis said the blast furnace on the east side of the Cuyahoga River will go down 5 September and remain inoperative for a little more than two months while a new brick lining is installed.
The blast furnace is where iron ore is converted into molten iron before being shipped to a basic oxygen furnace where it is then turned into steel.
The work will increase blast furnace capacity by 500 to 600 tons a day, Granakis said, or about 10 percent more than what is produced today…
