A World War II veteran, Mr. Songer began his career as a journeyman brick layer with Andco and International Chimney. He rose through the ranks and became general superintendent. 

He later founded companies that specialized in servicing the steel industry. At the age of 73, he started a new company, Songer Steel Services, where he served as chief executive and chairman until he was in his mid-80s. He retired at age 89.
