Partnership Forms to Produce Green Steel Tower for Wind Turbine

According to a joint press release, it will be one of the first onshore wind turbines in Europe and the first in Germany to have a tower made from green steel. The companies estimate they can reduce the CO2 footprint by over 70%.

“This cooperation provides us with an important basis from which we can offer our customers an even more sustainable tower option in future, while of course maintaining our high-quality standards and using state-of-the-art tower technology,” ENERCON global procurement director for towers Stefan Frey said.

Wind turbines with a hybrid tower are made completely of steel. The bottom is made of pre-edged steel plates and the top of conical steel sections. The companies said this makes it easier to install and transport, and the steel is entirely recyclable.

“We are working closely with strong research and industry partners to achieve a steel production that is as climate neutral as possible,” said Thorsten Gintaut, managing director of sales at Ilsenburger Grobblech, the steel processing business unit of the Salzgitter Group.
