Outotec Provides Technology to Tata Steel for Beneficiation of Chromite Tailings

The order will be booked in Outotec's 2014 first quarter order intake, but the parties have agreed not to disclose the contract value.

Tata Steel is committed to reduction of the carbon footprint of its operations by at least 20% in the coming ten years. Outotec's beneficiation technology will support Tata Steel with this initiative by enabling the use of a tailings deposit as a raw material source for the production of chromite concentrate.

Outotec's delivery includes basic and detail engineering, technology, process equipment and services for plant erection, start-up, commissioning, and operator training. The plant is scheduled to be operational by mid-2015 and has an annual throughput of approximately 400,000 tonnes.

"We are excited to be Tata Steel's technology partner in this true green mining project with our new concept for tailings treatment. With modern technology it is possible to extract metals from tailings. Using tailings as raw material eliminates the need for energy intensive comminution process, thus reducing carbon footprint of the production substantially," said Kalle Härkki, president of Outotec's Minerals Processing business area.
