Outokumpu to Supply Special Stainless for Dam at Finland’s Tammerkoski Rapids

Outokumpu has been selected to deliver LDX 2101®, a special duplex stainless steel, for the total reconstruction of the dam at the upper reaches of the Tammerkoski rapids in Tampere, Finland.

The Tammerkoski rapids drive four hydroelectric power plants. In the rehabilitation project, the dam walls will be renovated, and dam structures dating back to the early 1900s will be replaced. Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy, the energy company responsible for the project, was looking for a solution to bring the rapids’ two channels to the highest standards in the culturally and historically valuable site.

“Duplex LDX 2101 was an optimal solution for this project,” said Seppo Koli from Outokumpu. “The strength of the material enables thinner and lighter structures, which makes it easier to operate the gates. The high corrosion resistance ensures maintenance-free operation. Additionally, the hardness of the material surface protects the gates for example against loads caused by ice.”

The project in Tampere will be completed during 2012. Outokumpu will fabricate all the main structural parts of the sluice and flood gates from the company’s lean duplex LDX 2101 to ensure uninterrupted, largely maintenance-free service life for the next two centuries.
