Ontario Mill Plans Major Meltshop Investment
12/08/2020 - Italian stainless and specialty alloys producer Acciaierie Valbruna S.p.A. has contracted Tenova to replace an aging electric arc furnace at its Welland, Ont., Canada, facility.
According to Tenova, the new furnace will allow for an increase in the plant meltshop’s hourly production rate and its reliability.
“Our long-lasting relationship with the Valbruna Group is witnessed by several projects in its plants in Italy (Vicenza and Bolzano), where we implemented some of our technologies to increase safety, sustainability and production,” said Marco Longobardo, Tenova digital products manager.
“This is also the aim of this new project in Canada, where the plant will be a technological reference in North America for the production of stainless steel.”
The supply includes the furnace, ancillary equipment, including the charging system, and an automaton package.
“The complete management of this plant will be fully automatized and integrated in the new the EAF process control system,” Tenova said.
Valbruna ASW Inc. president Tim Clutterbuck told The St. Catharines Standard newspaper in Ontario that the new furnace will replace a unit built in the 1970s.
“It’s going to increase our efficiency, improve our cost effectiveness, and improve our environmental footprint,” he said.
