Ontario Halts Retaliatory 25% Tariff on Electricity

According to NBC News, Ford said he instead would meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick alongside the United States Trade Representative to discuss a renewal of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade act.

That came after Trump responded to Ford’s 25% surcharge on electricity by taking tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, a threat that was denounced by the United Steelworkers (USW) union in Canada.
In a statement, the USW said 50% tariffs threaten the existence of the Canadian steel industry and thousands of Canadian jobs.

“These tariffs are nothing less than a potential industry killer,” said Marty Warren, USW National Director for Canada. “It’s an economic attack on workers and our economic sovereignty. Trump's protectionist charade is not about helping American workers but about using them as political pawns while jeopardizing jobs on both sides of the border. Canadian steel and aluminum workers will not be intimidated. We are ready to fight back and we will.”
