Olympic Steel Names General Manager of Winder Operation
04/02/2015 - Olympic Steel Inc., a national metals service center, announced Sean Heenan has been named general manager of the company's operation in Winder, Ga., effective 1 April 2015.
Mr. Heenan, 44, began his steel industry career in 1994 as management associate at United States Steel Corporation. He quickly progressed to the position of outside sales representative before joining Olympic Steel in 1999 as e-commerce manager. In 2001, Mr. Heenan was hired by IPSCO Steel (later acquired by SSAB) where he served as sales manager.
Heenan returned to Olympic Steel in 2007 and held the position of regional sales manager until being promoted in 2010 to his most-recent position as general manger of the company's Schaumburg, Ill., facility.
"Sean has consistently proven his capabilities throughout an impressive 20-year career on both the production and distribution sides of the industry," said Raymond Walker, president and chief operating officer--Flat Rolled. "Under his leadership, we diversified our Chicago operation well beyond basic distribution of carbon products. In addition to growing Olympic Steel's participation in specialty metals, value-added processing and fabrication, he implemented numerous lean manufacturing practices that lowered costs and improved the operation's profitability. This experience makes him ideally suited to lead our growing Winder division as it increases volume and processing services associated with recent customer awards in this region."
Mr. Heenan earned a bachelor's degree from Lynchburg College in Virginia, and completed the Metals Service Center Institute's (MSCI) Strategic Metals Management program at the Olin Business School at Washington University, in St. Louis. He is also a Six Sigma Black Belt.
In his new role, he will report to John Brieck, vice president--Southern Region.
Founded in 1954, Olympic Steel is a leading U.S. metals service center focused on the direct sale and distribution of large volumes of processed carbon, coated and stainless flat-rolled sheet, coil and plate steel and aluminum products. The company's CTI subsidiary is a leading distributor of steel tubing, bar, pipe, valves and fittings, and fabricates pressure parts for the electric utility industry.
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Olympic Steel operates from 35 facilities in North America.
