OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih Reports Q2 Environmental Protection Investments

ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih reports that it invested a total of 111.197 million UAH in environment protection in the period from April to June 2010. The environmental protection investment represents an increase of 1.8 times compared to the same period of 2009.
         
The company has planned a number of environmental actions for 2010 to help ensure environmental safety of the Enterprise’s operation. The investments, which amount to 235.722 million UAH, include 212.169 million UAH for capital construction, 18.960 million UAH for capital repair, and 4.593 million UAH in other sources of financing.
 
One of the company’s basic environmental projects is reconstruction of the tailing facilities and recirculating water supply in the region of the Myrolyubovka village in order to increase the flood dike up to the level +145 meters. Since 01.08.10, the company has invested 104.235 million UAH, including 26.363 million UAH in Q2 2010. The environmental effect of this project includes an increase of the existing tailing pond capacities in order to prevent land pollution due to tailings disposal in the environment.  
 
In another project, the company is reconstructing the “Objedinennoye” Tailing Pond to increase the flood dike up to the level + 146 meters. Since 01.08.10, the company has invested 139.491 million UAH, including 6.826 million UAH invested in Q2 2010. This work has been completed, and the acts of readiness for operation have been signed. The environmental effect of this project includes an increase of existing tailing pond capacities in order to prevent land pollution due to tailings disposal in the environment.
 
The company also is modernizing the bulk silo gas-cleaning units of the 1st block and V-26 of Converters No. 4 to 6 to improve control over emissions in the area of converter charging. Since 01.08.10, the company has invested 28.732 million UAH, including 10.979 million UAH invested in Q2 2010. This environmental action is aimed to improve emissions by reducing the dust content of the output down to 50mg/nm3.
 
In another project, the company is working to join the air vents of apparatus and tanks of the Coke and By-Product Plant recovery shop. The company has invested 10.9 million UAH in this project, including 0.760 million UAH invested in Q2 2010. The environmental effect of this project includes joining all the air vents of the Sulfate department and the elimination of 11 emission sources.
 
The company also has been working on capital repair of Blast Furnace No. 6, including implementation of a number of environmental actions, including reconstruction of stockhouse gas cleaning unit, and construction of the gas cleaning unit of the casting yard. Since 01.08.10 when the work was started, the company has completed design documentation and dismantling work. The company also has purchased the equipment for electrostatic precipitator “Alstom Power Stavan” amounting to 27.54 million
UAH, including 15.834 million UAH spent in Q2 2010. The company expects to reduce emissions by 1489 tonnes/year as a result of this project.
 
As part of its capital repairs program, which targets increased reliability of fixed environmental assets operation, the company also performed the following capital repairs in Q2 2010:
 
      Repair of the gas cleaning unit of Converter No. 4. As of January 8, the actual investment was 3368.92 thousand UAH, including 222.12 thousand UAH spent in Q2 2010
 
      Repair of the pulp pipeline (Pulp pump station No. 3) of the Ore Beneficiation Plant’s Slurry Shop. As of 01.08.10 the actual investment was 4405.46 thousand. UAH, including 1728.99 thousand. UAH spent in Q2 2010
