Obituary: Richard C. Sussman
10/13/2015 - Richard C. Sussman, 66, of Munster, Ind., USA, passed away on 9 October 2015.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pamela; a daughter, Lilly (Mark) Overbeck; a son, Elliott Sussman; a grandson, Brooks Overbeck; his mother, Sara Sussman; sisters Diane (John) Arch and Lynn (Yitzchak) Alster; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Sussman.
Richard was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Queens, N.Y., USA. A graduate of Columbia University and MIT, with a doctorate in materials science, Richard enjoyed a 38-year career in the steel industry. He worked for Armco Steel in Cincinnati, and Allegheny Technologies Inc. and J&L Specialty Steel in Pittsburgh.
He retired from ArcelorMittal in 2013 as head of research and development. During the course of his career, he received many awards and recognition for his technical expertise in steel.
He held multiple patents, was widely published in technical journals and lectured at universities around the world. Richard was currently president of the company he founded, Enhanced Technology Services, which specializes in innovation training and consulting to manufacturers.
A man of many interests and talents, Richard loved the performing arts, especially the theatre, tennis, biking, model railroads, traveling and reading. He was a member of Temple Beth El and chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana.
He was chairman of the Society of Innovators.
A funeral service will be on Thursday, 15 October 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Beth El, 10001 Columbia Ave., Munster, Ind., USA. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, 15 October 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Temple.
Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
