Nucor-Yamato Steel Upgrade Incorporates Voith Driveline Products
02/22/2017 - Nucor-Yamato Steel Co. has chosen two Voith driveline products as part of recent upgrades to its No. 2 rolling mill, Voith tells AIST’s Steel News.
According to Voith, Nucor-Yamato installed Voith’s high-performance universal joint shafts and its safeset torque-limiting couplings as part of the project.
“The Voith universal joint shafts have a newly developed bearing technology that keeps the journal cross wear-free, thereby increasing the service life of the components and reducing maintenance costs by 25% to 30%. The safeset torque limiting couplings are uniquely designed to provide protection from torque overload events and thereby save hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs, unscheduled downtime and lost production,” the company said in a statement.
Through the project, Nucor-Yamato invested US$75 million to add quench-and-self-tempering technology to its No. 2 mill, allowing it to produce beams with high-strength, low-alloy metallurgies.
Nucor shipped its first batch of the beams in January and expects to complete trials across the product line by the end of June.
