Nucor to Shutter Texas Heavy Plate Facility
05/24/2023 - Nucor will close its Longview, Texas, USA, heavy plate mill later this year amid a reorganization of its plate mill group, the steelmaker said on Wednesday.
According to Nucor, Nucor Steel Longview will wind down operations in the third quarter, with production to be reallocated among the other Nucor plate mills, including its newly opened Brandenburg, Ky., facility. Brandenburg is capable of producing discrete, coiled, and heat-treated plate ranging from 60 inches to 168 inches wide, and in gauges from 3/16 of an inch to 14 inches.
The Brandenburg mill has an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons. Longview meanwhile has a capacity of 100,000 tons. Nucor acquired Longview from mining equipment maker Joy Global Inc. in 2016 for approximately US$29 million. Nucor will evaluate Longview’s production equipment and will move it to other locations, if feasible.
Employees are being offered positions elsewhere in the company, Nucor said.
“I’d like to thank our teammates at Nucor Steel Longview for their outstanding performance and achievements during the past several years. My hope is that all our teammates will choose to remain a part of our Nucor family and accept positions at other Nucor divisions,” said Al Behr, Nucor executive vice president for plate and structural products.
In addition to Brandenburg, Nucor operates a discrete plate mill in Hertford County, N.C., and a cut-to-length and discrete mill in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
