Nucor to Add Heat Treat Facility at Hertford Plate Mill
08/01/2008 - Nucor announces plans to invest approximately $110 million for a new plate heat treating facility at its plate mill in Hertford County, N.C.
Nucor Corp. says it will invest approximately $110 million to install a plate heat treating facility at its plate mill in Hertford County, N.C. With an estimated annual capacity of 120,000 tons, the new heat treat line will be capable of producing heat treated plate from 3/16 through 2 inches thick.
“The addition of the heat treat facility at Nucor Steel–Hertford County is an important first step in enabling the Nucor plate group to expand its value-added product mix,” said Dan DiMicco, Nucor's Chairman, CEO and President.
Nucor's plate mill in Hertford County, N.C., started operations in 2000 and has an annual capacity of approximately 1.6 million tons. Combined with Nucor's plate mill located in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Nucor's current annual plate production capacity is approximately 2.8 million tons.
Heat treated plate is used in applications where higher strength, abrasion resistance and toughness are required. “The addition of this facility supports our objective of providing a full range of plate products to our customers,” added DiMicco.
Installation of the heat treat facility will begin after satisfactory resolution of regulatory approvals and finalization of equipment and other contracts.
