Nucor Steel Indiana Commissions First EAF ZoloSCAN System
05/27/2014 - Nucor Steel Indiana, in Crawfordsville Ind., has successfully commissioned the first ZoloSCAN-EAF laser off-gas diagnostic system for electric arc furnace steelmaking.
ZoloSCAN technology is provided exclusively by Zolo Technologies, Boulder, Colo., and utilizes tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) to measure carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water and temperature on a near real time basis (less than 2 second delay) for the EAF steelmaking process. This enables rapid process feedback for improved control of energy and metallurgical inputs to the EAF process. The capability to direct measure water vapor provides a leak detection sensor long sought after by the steel industry. ZoloSCAN-EAF eliminates the troublesome and costly maintenance of traditional analyzer based systems while providing a direct read, fast responding water detection system unavailable anywhere else.
Nucor reports that they have been able to utilize ZoloSCAN-EAF to improve their steelmaking process, resulting in substantial savings of electrical energy input, carbon additions and reduced power on times. The system is user friendly, reliable and low in maintenance. Based on the rapid payback and one year of operation on the North EAF, Nucor has placed an order for a second unit to support the South EAF.
Zolo Technologies Inc., Boulder, Colo., is a global leader in providing ultra-harsh combustion monitoring systems to the power generation, steel and petro-chemical refining markets with over 60 units worldwide. Zolo’s technology can measure where no other technology can. As a result, customers realize improvements in process performance, efficiency, reliability and safety. Zolo Technologies is ISO 9001 certified and designs, develops, manufactures, installs and services all of our products.
