Nucor Steel Contracts CORE for EAF Revamp

Nucor Steel recently contracted Core Furnace Systems to convert an existing conventional-tapping EAF into a bottom-tapping EAF at its Jackson, Miss., facility.

The revamp project comprises a new lower shell, a “king-pin” type superstructure, tilting and retractable maintenance platforms, electrode columns, and roof-lift mechanism. CORE will also supply various other components related to conversion of the existing EAF to the bottom-tapping configuration.

The EAF upgrade will help to improve the efficiency and reliability of Nucor Jackson’s scrap melting process.

Installation will take place in 2008.
