Nucor Slab Caster Will Belong to a Special Class, Says SMS group
11/05/2020 - Nucor Corp.’s planned Kentucky plate mill will house one of the world’s largest continuous casters, according to the company that will build the machine.
In a statement commenting on the facility’s groundbreaking in late October, SMS group said the caster will produce slabs with thicknesses of between 200 mm and 305 mm and in widths of up to 3,150 mm, placing it in an elite group of casters.
SMS group is supplying the vertical bending caster, a customized strand guide, an ultrafast cooling section and a secondary cutting line. It also will provide the reheating system and heat treat facilities.
“We are proud to partner with SMS on our new steel plate mill. This is the largest capital investment project in our company’s history and when it is completed and operational, we’ll be one of only two companies that can produce essentially all of the plate sizes consumed in the U.S. today,” said Johnny Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Nucor Steel Brandenburg.
