Nucor Signs Power Purchase Agreement With Kentucky Solar Project
08/08/2023 - Nucor Corp. on Monday announced a power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy Resources to secure 250 MW of renewable solar energy for its Kentucky steelmaking operations.
In a statement, Nucor said it has agreed to purchase power from Sebree Solar, NextEra’s upcoming 400 MW solar project to be built in Henderson County, Ky., USA. Construction on the new facility is expected to begin this fall. Nucor Steel Gallatin will supply steel for the Sebree Solar project as well as another Kentucky-based NextEra solar project, Green River Solar.
"We are delighted to work with NextEra Energy Resources, and to be a key material supplier to this important addition to the power grid in Kentucky where we have grown our presence considerably in recent years," said Greg Murphy, Nucor’s executive vice president of business services and general counsel, in a statement. "Our country's energy transition will be built with steel and the steel it is built with should be produced sustainably … This agreement will enable us to further reduce our climate footprint and meet our goals for improvement."
