Nucor recently restarted hot run operation on its Darlington No. 2 Bar Mill following a major upgrade by Danieli. The upgrade project targeted increased plant uptime and efficiency.
Danieli’s scope of supply comprised replacement of nine intermediate/finishing horizontal stands with a new ten-stand twist-free mill made up of SHS stands and quick changing facilities. The project, which was completed during one month of plant stoppage, also included removal of the old stands, rebuilding of civil works, installation and startup of the new equipment.
Nucor’s Darlington No. 2 Bar Mill produces 16- to 35-mm diameter rebars (with multistrand slitting for the smaller sizes), 41- to 90-mm diameter round bars, 75- to 200-mm flats, 45- to 127-mm angles and channels. The mill operates at rates of up to 75 tons per hour or 90 tons per hour when in hot-charge mode.
