Nucor Steel Kankakee recently restarted operations on their bar and section mill following completion of a modernization project by Danieli Morgårdshammar. The project included replacement of the existing cooling bed and services for better coping with productivity and product quality requirements.
Danieli’s scope of supply included a new 80-meter long cooling bed fitted with water-spray extra-cooling system and the associated new entry roller table. The line produces up to 2-1/4-inch bar and rebars, up to 4-inch angles and 8-inch flats. In addition to Danieli Morgårdshammar’s responsibilities, Danieli Automation supplied electricals and controls.
Plant modification was completed over a record time period of less than two weeks including dismantling of old equipment and civil works, new foundations, new equipment installation, and cold run, hot run and commissioning. The new line operated in full production as soon as it was restarted.
