Nucor Mill Commissions Bar Spooling Line

In a statement, Danieli said the line consists of a 4-pass, Delta-type fast finishing block, which extends the plant’s product range to No. 3 rebar; five water boxes for heat treatment; cropping and high-speed shears; two 5-ton horizontal spooler machines; and a coil handling, strapping and collecting area.

“High mechanical characteristics and good weldability of the finished product, plus optimized coil handling, complete the benefits of the new line, which will be managed by Danieli Automation Q-VID system and deliver twist-free compact and regularly shaped coils at up to 30 m/s,” Danieli said.

Nucor chief executive Leon Topalian said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call that the mill’s spooled bar is being well received in the market.

“We are growing our number of active customers each month,” he said.

He also said the mill, located in Sedalia, Mo., achieved positive EBITDA in June and will be bottom-line profitable by September. The mill began operating earlier this year.

Nucor is also installing spooling capabilities at its other new rebar mill in Frostproof, Fla. That mill, which also is being built by Danieli, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
