Nucor Inks Green Electricity Deal
03/24/2021 - Nucor Corp. has signed a virtual power purchase agreement with a Texas wind farm operator, locking up 100 megawatts’ worth of green energy credits.
"As an electric arc furnace steelmaker and North America's largest recycler, Nucor is already among the cleanest and most sustainable steel producers in the world. This agreement will enable us to further reduce our climate footprint beyond our operations," said Nucor president and chief executive Leon Topalian.
"Supporting the growth of renewable power generation is not only fundamental to who we are as a company, it also allows us to continue to lead the way forward for the global steel industry."
The 10-year agreement with Ørsted Onshore North America and its under-construction Western Trail wind farm in North Texas is the steelmaker’s second virtual power purchase agreement.
A virtual power purchase agreement is a financial transaction that provides power users with a hedge against electricity price volatility as well as green energy credits.
“We're excited to partner with Nucor in their efforts to invest in clean, renewable energy," said Ørsted Onshore senior vice president and chief commercial officer Vishal Kapadia. "The (agreement) at Western Trail demonstrates our ability to provide customized solutions to support achievement of corporate sustainability ambitions."
