Nucor Facilities Receive Environmental Awards

Two Nucor facilities have been awarded environmental awards related to their commitment to environmental excellence. Vulcraft-Texas and Century Industrial Coatings have been honored with the 2012 Texas Environmental Excellence Award for reducing VOC emissions.

The 2012 Texas Environmental Excellence Awards are given to a select group of public and private organizations in nine diverse categories. Vulcraft-Texas has been recognized for its work replacing solvent-based primers with water-based primers. This project has resulted in an 85% reduction in emissions from not only the Texas facility but all Vulcraft operations nationwide.

"This technology advancement is just one component of the Vulcraft group's overall commitment to environmental excellence across all of our manufacturing facilities. It is because of our team members' daily efforts, over the course of several years, that we are able to achieve such a significant reduction. This technology is also in use at our other facilities resulting in even more significant nationwide reductions," said Steve Rowlan, Director of Environmental Affairs for Nucor Corp.

The Texas Environmental Excellence Awards are given annually by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and was accepted by James Landrum, General Manager of Vulcraft-Texas and Vice President of Nucor, along with Century Industrial Coatings at a recent ceremony.

In addition, Nucor Steel-Berkeley has been awarded the South Carolina Manufacturers Association's "Made in SC Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award." This award was given to companies that exemplify excellence in environment, safety, and community leadership.

"Our objective has always been to make steel safely and be environmental and cultural stewards in our community. We are proud to receive this award recognizing our successes," said Giff Daughtridge, General Manager of Nucor Steel-Berkeley and Vice President of Nucor.
