Nucor Chooses Russula Mill Control for Jewett Mill

Russula announced it has been selected by Nucor Steel of Jewett, Texas, to upgrade the automation system and drives for its Texas 1 bar mill. The new equipment will improve productivity by reducing downtime due to aging electronics, faster processor speed and advanced mill control techniques.
The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 will upgrade the Texas 1 stacker with new control and upgraded drives, including a safety PLC for improved operator safety. Phase 1 will be commissioned in May 2013. Phase 2 will upgrade the Texas 1 continuous mill including all mill stands, shears and cooling bed. This is scheduled for November 2013.
The new Russula Mill Control will provide better cascade speed control, low tension and loop control and superior shear performance. The recipe storage system will reduce operator errors. The existing drives will be modernized with new digital armature and field controllers to have the same high performance as new drives. Russula will also supply a high speed data acquisition system for faster troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
The Russula Mill Control is constructed using a selection of hardware chosen specifically for this project, including Rockwell ControlLogix PLC’s, ABB DCR800 drive rebuild packages, Wonderware HMI and IBA HSDAS.
Russula is responsible for installation supervision, commissioning and operator/maintenance training.
