Nucor Breaks Ground on Kentucky Plate Mill
10/23/2020 - Nucor Corp. has broken ground on its US$1.7 billion plate mill in Kentucky, state officials have said.
In an announcement, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the mill will provide a significant economic boost to the state, providing 400 permanent full-time jobs and up to 1,500 construction jobs.
"Nucor Steel Brandenburg will be a difference-maker for its employees, their families and the economy of Meade County and the surrounding region," Beshear said. "Nucor already stands as a major employer in the commonwealth, and its continued growth helps build a brighter and better Kentucky for our families.”
The mill is being built in an Brandenburg, Ky., industrial park that sits along the Ohio River. Kentucky officials said the location will allow the mill to accept barge deliveries of direct reduced iron and scrap. The location also puts the plant in the center of the U.S. manufacturing corridor, they added.
“We are very excited to begin construction on our new plate mill in Kentucky. This state-of-the-art mill will make us a market leader in steel plate products,” said Nucor president and chief executive Leon Topalian. “We have been doing business in Kentucky for over a decade and have benefited from the strong business climate and great local workforce.”
