Nucor Board Greenlights Funding for New Micro-Mill
02/21/2024 - Nucor Corp.’s board of directors has agreed to allocate US$860 million for construction of a rebar micro-mill, the steelmaker said Wednesday.
In a statement, Nucor said it is still evaluating sites in the Pacific Northwest for the mill, which, when built, will become its fourth — and largest — rebar micro-mill. With a capacity of 650,000 tons, it will have approximately 50% more capacity than Nucor’s micro-mill currently under construction in Lexington, N.C., USA.
“This new rebar micro-mill in the Pacific Northwest will help Nucor maintain its leadership in the steel bar market and further execute our strategy to better serve our customers west of the Rocky Mountains, which also includes the addition of a meltshop at our Arizona bar mill,” said Leon Topalian, Nucor chair, president and chief executive officer.
Nucor first revealed plans for the mill in October 2023. It is expected to take two years to build and will produce a full range of rebar sizes and will have spooling capabilities.
