Nucor Awards Tenova HYL Contract for World’s Largest DR Plant
02/17/2011 - Nucor has signed a contract with Tenova HYL for the world’s largest single DR module ever to be constructed. The 2.5 million ton per year, Louisiana-based Energiron ZR plant will supply DR to Nucor’s other steelmaking facilities.
Nucor Corp. has signed a contract with Tenova HYL for the world’s largest single DR module ever to be constructed.
Nucor will install a 2.5 million ton per year Energiron ZR plant using Tenova HYL’s state-of-the-art reformerless process design. The plant will be built in Louisiana, and will supply highly metallized, high carbon DRI to Nucor steel plants.
The plant will be designed to produce cold-discharge DRI of 96% metallization and 3.0% carbon in the form of iron carbide. Iron carbide from the new plant will be shipped to Nucor’s other producing facilities for use in their steelmaking process. Nucor, which has a long history of leading the industry in their innovative practices, continues to solidify their position with this new project and to further advance in their commitment to secure their own long-term supply of quality iron feedstock.
The Energiron ZR process offers low plant operating costs and through intrinsic characteristics of the process, allows the selective capture of CO2, which can be commercialized as a by-product. The DR plant will also comply with the EPA’s environmental regulations in terms of NOx, SOx and other pollutants, having already been granted the corresponding air permit in Louisiana.
The project covers the full supply of the DR plant, license, training and technical assistance in commissioning and start-up. With the support and backing of the Tenova Group, Tenova HYL will supply the full DR plant equipment manufacture and delivery, mainly from USA and NAFTA, and will supervise project implementation.
“This is a perfect fit in terms of providing the vanguard steel company in the U.S. with what we feel is the vanguard technology in production of direct reduced iron for steelmaking,” said Roberto Pancaldi, CEO of Tenova HYL.
