Nucor Announces Plans to Double Capacity of Gallatin Sheet Mill
09/07/2018 - Nucor Corp.’s board of directors has greenlighted a US$650 million expansion of its Kentucky sheet mill, the company said on Friday.
In a statement, Nucor said the expansion will take Nucor Steel Gallatin’s capacity from 1.6 million tons to 3 million tons and increase the maximum coil width to about 73 inches.
Nucor’s announcement didn’t detail the project, but said it would complement its previously announced addition of a 500,000-ton continuous pickling and galvanizing line. That project, expected to cost US$176 million, is to be completed in the first half of 2019.
"Together with the new galvanizing line, this expansion increases our presence in the important Midwest market, specifically in the automotive, agriculture, heavy equipment, and energy pipe and tube sectors," said Nucor chairman and chief executive John Ferriola.
Nucor said it is continuing to consider other expansion projects throughout its sheet business.
