Jan. 17, 2007 — U.S. steel mills shipped 7,991,000 net tons of steel in November 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

November shipments reflect a 7.8% decrease from the 8,665,000 net tons shipped in November 2005, and an 8.4% decrease from the 8,725,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, October 2006.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

• Service centers and distributors, +2.7%
• Automotive, +8.5%
• Construction and contractors’ products, +11.4%
• Oil and gas, +17.5%
• Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +5.9%
• Appliances, utensils and cutlery, down 5.8%
• Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +1.1%
• Electrical equipment, +16.5%
