Northwest Pipe to Supply Pipe for Hydroelectric Project in Oregon

Northwest Pipe Co. has received a Letter of Intent from Slayden Construction Group, Inc. of Stayton, Ore., to supply pipe for the Juniper Ridge Hydroelectric Power Project for the Central Oregon Irrigation District.

The 3.27-megawatt Juniper Ridge Hydro project is part of the Central Oregon Irrigation District's 22-mile Pilot Butte Canal. Northwest Pipe will supply pipe valued at approximately $7.0 million for an engineered and custom fabricated piping system that will provide watershed benefits by eliminating water loss through the canal,

The saved water will ultimately translate into the placement of more than 20 cubic feet of water per second into the Deschutes River. That additional water will benefit the river habitat and the ESA-listed steelhead recently reintroduced downstream. Increased river flows will also enhance water quality conditions of concern to the Department of Environmental Quality under the Clean Water Act.

Northwest Pipe will supply approximately 14,000 feet of 108-inch steel pipe for the project’s piping system. The company expects to manufacture this pipe at its Portland, Ore., facility with delivery scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2009.

Northwest Pipe manufactures welded steel pipe and other products in two business groups. Its Water Transmission Group is the leading supplier of large diameter, high-pressure steel pipe products that are used primarily for water infrastructure in North America. Its Tubular Products Group manufactures smaller diameter steel pipe for a wide range of applications including construction, agricultural, energy, traffic and other commercial and industrial uses. Headquartered in Vancouver, Wash., the company has ten manufacturing facilities across the United States and Mexico.
