Northshore Mining Honored
for Mine Safety Performance

Feb. 4, 2004 — Northshore Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn., is the recipient of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.’s 2003 President's Award for Safety. The award is presented annually to the Cliffs mine with the best safety performance as measured by the frequency rate for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reportable injuries.

This is the third consecutive year, fourth year overall, that Northshore has won the President's Award for Safety. Northshore completed 2003 with an injury frequency rate of 1.99.

John S. Brinzo, Cliffs' Chairman, President and CEO, said "Safe production is a Cliffs' core value and is fundamental for operations improvement. Safety does not just happen; it takes commitment of all employees to not only create a safe work environment but to work safely as well. Northshore's employees are commended for embracing safe production and for their success towards achieving an accident-free workplace."

"Northshore's employees are dedicated to excellence in safety and health; it is an important part of our culture. Receiving the President's Award for Safety four out of six years clearly shows our dedication to national leadership in employee health and safety."

Past recipients of the President's Award for Safety include: Empire Mine, Palmer, Mich. (1998); Northshore Mine (1999); LTV Steel Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn. (2000); and Northshore Mine (2001, 2002 and 2003).


Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, is the largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America and sells the majority of its pellets to integrated steel companies in the United States and Canada. The company operates six iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada.
