NLMK USA Strikes Up Conversion Agreement With Nearby Steel Producer
10/25/2018 - Stainless and specialty alloys producer Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI) is beginning to roll carbon steel slab for another steelmaker under a newly signed conversion agreement.
In an announcement, Allegheny Technologies said it will covert slabs to hot-rolled sheet for NLMK USA on its Hot-Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, Pa., USA.
The companies said the agreement, which runs to December 2019, is a win for both parties, allowing ATI to put unused capacity on the rolling mill to work and, at the same time, enabling NLMK to offer some new steel products.
“Due to its immense power and unique capabilities, ATI’s rolling facility enables us to increase the breadth of our product portfolio to better complement the products produced at our Sharon, Pa., and Portage, Ind., facilities,” said NLMK USA chief executive Bob Miller.
“We were attracted to the facility’s capabilities and its close proximity to many of our strategic customers,” he added.
Bob Wetherbee, ATI’s executive vice president for ATI’s flat-rolled group and its incoming chief executive said the deal provides ATI with guaranteed fee-per-ton volumes and significantly increases the mill’s utilization.
“This incremental volume benefits all HRPF-produced products,” he said.
