NLMK Indiana Production Beats All-Time Record

NLMK Indiana, a U.S. subsidiary of the NLMK Group, recently broke all time production records.

During the January through October period of 2012, NLMK Indiana produced over 617,000 tonnes of slabs and over 586,000 tonnes of hot rolled coils. Melt shop utilization rates reached 96.1%.

These results exceeded the previous 2011 records established at 610,000 tonnes of slabs and 584,000 tonnes of HRC.

Operations in November and December will allow NLMK Indiana to overachieve the record by more than 15% in 2012, exceeding 700,000 tonnes.

The outstanding performance of this facility was a result of increased efficiencies, improved product line, a deeper market presence, and getting exposure to growing markets, such as the high carbon and OCTG (oil country tubular goods) product lines, NLMK said. Over the last two years, NLMK Indiana has entered the fast-growing U.S. niche product market, and signed a number of promising contracts with tube and pipe manufacturers.

In Q4 2012 and 2013, NLMK Indiana will commission new equipment for its EAF, steel casting and rolling operations. The company is pursuing efforts aimed at increasing safety, reliability, product quality, and productivity.

NLMK Indiana is a part of NLMK USA division. Located in Portage, Ind., the facility operates an electric arc furnace melt shop that produces continuous cast steel slabs and a hot strip rolling mill for processing slabs into flat rolled steel products. NLMK Indiana is specializing in the production and sale of hot rolled coils primarily to pipe and tube manufacturers and steel processors. The company operates an EAF melt shop and hot strip rolling mill of 0.77 mtpy and 1 mtpy capacity, respectively.
