NLMK Idles Blast Furnace for Repairs

Responding to speculation and media allegations, the NLMK Group this week reported that the idling of one of its blast furnaces was a scheduled stop for planned repairs at its Blast Furnace Shop No.1.

The repair shutdown had been scheduled last year.

The company said the shutdown was “not an extraordinary measure” and that the speculation that it was idling the blast furnace due to “lack of contracts for export deliveries to Europe” was “false”.

Over the past several months, NLMK has announced a number of investments and start-ups, including

·         An expansion of secondary metallurgy capacity at Novolipetsk
·         A new quench and temper line at NLMK Clabecq plant in Belgium
·         A new converter at Lipetsk
·         A revamped continuous caster at Lipetsk
·         New bell-type annealing plant at Lipetsk
·         New RH degasser at Novolipetsk
·         New BOF at Novolipetsk

With more than 12.6 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity, NLMK is a leading international steel company and one of the world's foremost suppliers of slabs and transformer steel as well as a comprehensive range of flat and long steel products. In 2010, the company reported revenues of USD8.35 billion and the production of 11.5 million tonnes of steel.
