NLMK Expands Ladle Metallurgy Facilities

NLMK has commissioned a new RH vacuum degasser designed for the production of four million tonnes/year of high-quality steel that will be cast on the facility’s continuous casting machines.

The RUR 3.9 billion investment in the new RH degasser will enable the company to ensure that its rolling assets in Russia and Europe will be covered by high-quality slabs. Once the high-performance RH degasser is put into operation, the company also expects to expand its steel product mix through the introduction of new grades with maximum carbon content of 0.002% and maximum hydrogen of 0.0001%, including grades for shipbuilding application, automotive and pipe industry.

The new RH degasser at NLMK's main production site in Lipetsk will be a part of the secondary metallurgy complex in the facility’s BOF Shops. The facility also includes a 400,000 tonnes/year RH vacuum degasser, four ladle furnaces with 12 million tonnes total capacity, and ten ladle metallurgy furnaces.

The project, which has been constructed and started up with the support of SMS Mevac (Germany), has been implemented within the frames of Stage II of NLMK's Technical Upgrade Program.

NLMK,
an international vertically-integrated steelmaking company, operates more than 15 million tonnes of annual liquid steel production capacity.
