Nissan to Expand Use of Advanced High-Strength Steel
06/21/2018 - Nissan Motors Co. Ltd. said it plans to use more advanced high-strength steel in its vehicles and aims to have the material account for 25% of components by weight.
The Japanese automaker said the decision comes as it launches a sustainability plan that calls for it to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles by 40%.
The company noted that its luxury INFINITI QX50 midsize SUV, which went on sale in the U.S. in March, is the world’s first vehicle with front and rear side members made from 980 MPa ultrahigh-tensile-strength steel, along with other body frame parts.
The model uses a cold-pressed, 980 MPa steel that was developed in conjunction with Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp.
