Nippon Steel’s Point Person for U.S. Steel Acquisition Returns to U.S.
02/14/2025 - Nippon Steel Corp. has dispatched vice chairperson Takahiro Mori to the United States to establish a framework for discussion with the Trump administration over the U. S. Steel acquisition, reports The Japan Times.
According to the newspaper, a schedule for a meeting with the Trump administration is believed to be undetermined, but Nippon Steel chairman and chief executive officer Eiji Hashimoto is expected to attend.
Japan's TV Tokyo reported that Nippon Steel still wants to acquire all of United States Steel Corp., and not just take a stake in the company, despite statements from U.S. and Japanese leaders indicating that Nippon Steel's acquisition will take some other form.
President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he "wouldn't mind" a Japanese company taking a minority stake in U. S. Steel.
"Minority stake I wouldn't mind greatly," he said, according to the Reuters news service.
