Nippon Steel to Acquire Two Thai Steelmakers
01/24/2022 - The Reuters news service reported on Friday that Japan's Nippon Steel is set to purchase two electric arc furnace steelmakers in Thailand in a US$763 million deal.
Through the acquisition of G Steel PCL and G J Steel PCL, Nippon will curb its reliance on blast furnaces that use coking coal and emit CO2. The deal will also help the company expand its overseas presence and secure ironmaking facilities in growing markets.
"Our aim is to become an insider as a local integrated steel mill in Thailand and capture growing demand for hot-rolled steel sheets," Takahiro Mori, executive vice president at Nippon Steel, said in a news briefing.
The deal will raise Nippon Steel’s global steelmaking capacity to 69 million metric tons.
