Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Reports Power Failure at Nagoya Works
01/20/2014 - At the Nagoya Works of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. (NSSMC) in Japan, a power failure occurred around 11:50 a.m., Friday, 17 January 2014, due to a failure in the substation facility of its power plant.
In order to deal with the power failure, coke oven gas was burnt off and released.
By the Saturday morning, 18 January, power supply to the manufacturing facilities resumed, ending combustion dispersion from the coke plant.
On Monday, 20 January, however, a power failure occurred again at part of Nagoya Works at around 9:10 a.m., and smoke was released. By around 11:15 a.m., the smoke dispersion was ended.
No injuries were reported from the incident. Coke oven gas which produced smoke has been burnt off and released to the air safely. NSSMC is now investigating possible effects to the manufacturing facilities of Nagoya Works. The material damage to those facilities is limited at this point, it said. It intends to take measures to ensure that the product supply to customers would not be affected.
NSSMC will investigate the cause of this incident and take measures in an attempt to prevent the recurrence of this situation.
The company says it deeply regrets any inconvenience and concern that may have been experienced by neighborhood residents and other related parties.
