Nippon Steel Moves up Blowout Date for Kimitsu No. 2 Blast Furnace Reline

Nippon Steel announced this week plans to reline and enlarge its Kimitsu No. 2 blast furnace as part of its efforts to achieve greater competitiveness regarding both pig iron and steel manufacture.

The company has been making preparations for the reline project, which is scheduled to start in the middle of January 2012. Now, in response to changes taking place in the global steel demand, the company has decided to blow out the furnace earlier than originally planned, in early December of this year.

The relining itself will start in the middle of January next year, as initially scheduled. As part of the project the blast furnace, which currently has an inner volume of 3,273 m3, will be expanded to an inner volume of approximately 4500 m3. The company said the project’s construction period is scheduled to last from mid-January to mid-May 2012.
