Nippon Steel Asks for Production Help Following Fire
01/13/2017 - Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. has asked competitors for help in meeting orders after a fire damaged its heavy plate mill in western Japan.
According to Japanese news agency Kyodo, the steelmaker is turning to JFE Steel Corp. and Kobe Steel Ltd. for assistance, in addition to drawing on inventories and scheduling production at its three other heavy plate mills in Japan.
The mill, which accounted for roughly half of the company’s heavy plate production in fiscal 2016, was taken off-line last week after fire broke out in an electrical room. According to the Reuters news service, the fire took 35 hours to extinguish.
