Broken Contract Leads to Mothball of Teesside Plant

07 December 2009 - Corus says that an international consortium has broken a binding contract that has led to the partial implementation of a proposal announced in May 2009, mothballing some of the facilities belonging to the Teesside Cast Products business in northeast England.

Ruukki Signs Two Infrastructure Construction Contracts

07 December 2009 - Ruukki has signed a steel structure contract for the delivery of the foundation piles for the Särkijärvi bridge in Tampere, Finland. The company will also deliver almost 6 km of large diameter steel pipe piles fitted with rock shoes for the foundations of more than 20 bridges in the highway 5 improvement project in Kuopio, Finland.

Redaelli Opens Wire Rope Production Facility in Italy

04 December 2009 - Redaelli has opened a new manufacturing facility in Trieste that will produce what it claims to be the largest wire ropes in the world. The facility will have the capacity to produce cables that weigh over 550 tonnes and are 175 mm in diameter.

Anti-Noise Screens Significantly Reduce Noise in Bartovice

04 December 2009 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava has erected three anti-noise screens that separate the Bartovice marshalling yard from the residential zone. A second stage of noise-reduction actions, planned for 2010, will include the erection of a fourth screen.

02 December 2009 - Posco-Nippon Steel RHF Joint Venture, Co., Ltd. completes construction of the Pohang-Gwangyang Rotary Hearth Furnace factory. The RHF factories constructed in the dump area of Pohang-Gwangyang Steelworks will use dust and sludge to produce 280,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron and hot briquetted iron.

01 December 2009 - The rebuilt blast furnace ‘C’ at Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur works India has been operating with new Siemens Simetal Gimbal Top charging systems since the end of September. Tata Steel is the first steelmaker to utilize this new charging system on a blast furnace.

Corus Pilot Plant to Test CO2-Reducing Technology

01 December 2009 - Corus will test a new iron-making technology, called “Hisarna,” in a pilot plant project at its IJmuiden steelworks in the Netherlands. The technology reportedly has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in blast furnace steelmaking by more than 50%.

Rio Tinto Enters Two Agreements with IOH

27 November 2009 - Rio Tinto reaches an agreement with Iron Ore Holdings, enabling the sale of ore from IOH's Phil's Creek deposit to Rio Tinto under a mine-gate sale process. Rio Tinto has also entered an exclusive agreement with IOH to examine its Iron Valley deposit.
