New Power Plant Enables ArcelorMittal Zenica to Reduce Emissions

The power plant has been operating since November 2021 and provides heating to the town of Zenica. Its steam generators use coke oven gas and blast furnace waste gas from ArcelorMittal Zenica, and is also equipped to operate using natural gas.

The power plant was built by Toplana Zenica, which is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal Zenica, the City of Zenica, and KPA Unicon and FinnFund.

According to ArcelorMittal, the new power plant eliminates the need for 150,000 metric tons of coal annually, allowing for an 18% reduction in ArcelorMittal Zenica’s total CO2 emissions.

“I am very proud of the achievements of the entire team, and am especially grateful to the ArcelorMittal Group, which provided a full guarantee for the EBRD loan funds of €41 million,” Nikhil Mehta, ArcelorMittal Zenica’s chief executive, said.
